What Kind of Health Concern Are We Talking About Here?

There are many kinds of health concerns. Today, however, we’re talking about those who are immunocompromised or suffer from a chronic illness. These people must monitor their everyday health more closely than others; this is only heightened during the risk of the pandemic.

A compromised immune system is less likely to successfully fight off damaging pathogens found in contaminated foods. This takes watching what you eat to a whole new level.

People can be immunocompromised for a number of reasons, such as from chronic illness, chemotherapy, or even because they are the recent recipient of an organ transplant. While organ transplants can be treated (and helped along by treatments like stem cell injections), some conditions last a lifetime.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to take the proper steps to protect your health. Here’s some tips to help you stay safe.

4 Food Safety Tips

  1. You probably won’t get COVID-19 from contaminated food, but better safe than sorry.

Thus far, studies have found that COVID-19 does not travel by food (or even the packaging of food), and more so from person to person directly. The virus does, however, survive on surfaces for hours or days on end, so a precautionary wipe of the packaging or rinsing of produce is still a good idea.

  1. Hot foods are your friend.

Heat has been found to be the enemy of the coronavirus, destroying any remnants of it in the cooking process. That’s why hotter foods are a more sure bet than cold or room temperature ones.

  1. Takeout is also your friend.

The safest food option would be to make your meals, at home, but we know you’re not up to cooking every day. So if you’re going to order out, getting food delivered reduces the amount of direct contact with other people, making it safer. Still, make sure to wipe the packaging, transfer the food to your own plate, and wash your hands before chowing down.

  1. Get your groceries delivered as well.

This is pretty much the same principle as the previous one. By getting your groceries delivered or employing curbside pickup, you’re risking less contact with others. Just make sure to throw out the bags and boxes the food arrives in. (And if you must venture to the store, remember: mask, six feet apart, wipe down the cart.)
